IMMERSE YOURSELF IN HISTORY AND NATURE
A HAIDA VILLAGE, WHERE RAINFOREST MEETS THE OCEAN
Kaysuun (also known as Kaisun) was inhabited up until the 1870s. 18 houses once stood here, which supported a population of 329 Xaayda Haida. At time of contact, the village chief was Nañ na’gage skilxa’ogas, which when mispronounced by Europeans was frequently referred to as Chief Skotsgai.
Kaysuun was divided by moiety sections; the Raven houses were on the west side of the village, and the Eagles lived to the east. The Chief lived in “House Upon Which are Clouds.” In front of this house formerly stood the only mortuary pole in Kaysuun, which was erected for the sister of Captain Gold from Ts’aa.ahl.
